Chapter 1.2: Sweet & Bittersweet Surprises

In the last chapter, Lucie fell in love with David and they moved into her home together. She found a job in the stylist career but had to put it on hold when she got pregnant and gave birth to twins Anthony and Adeline.

Thank you for your thoughtful wedding gifts, Marilyn. Hope to see you soon! Lucie was still writing thank you notes up till her twins' birthday.

The twins' birthday was a shmoozer fest. David's boss, Gwen, was there, and was dressed a bit inappropriately to be someone's boss.

'She put me in the stuffy suit.' David whispered to his wife.

'Talk about a hypocrite. At least she pays our bills.' Lucie scrunched up her face in disgust. "Why, hello, Glen! Please, please, help yourself. Eat more cake!"

Anthony inherited his mother's hair and his father's eyes. He slightly resembled his mother.

Adeline was the spitting image of her brother but inherited the famous Wintergreen hair. Lucie's side of the family occasionally spurted out the golden bronze traces of hair. She was proud to see that her genes ran through her daughter.

Their financial problems were not over.

"Just get the damn repairman." Lucie rolled her eyes.

Their maid was always worth paying when Lucie had her hands full with the twins.

That is, until they couldn't pay her anymore with only $74 left in their family funds. She proceeded to take their clothesline.

"Robin..." Lucie sputtered.

"Mrs. Wintergreen, if you had enough money to pay me, I wouldn't have to take it. Besides, we need a line to dry at home." Robin snubbed.

"But then what am I supposed to do with wet clothes!" wailed Lucie.

"Wait till your husband gets home from his job and with a few clicks, you'd get another clothesline. Easy as pie."

"And she told me...it was so simple to get a clothesline! Just a few clicks" Lucie guffawed with laughter.

Marilyn giggled. "What on earth did she mean!"

With their life living paycheck to paycheck, Lucie called her best friend and David's sister on occasion to help come take care of the children. Marilyn herself also had a toddler daughter but her mother didn't mind helping out while she went to watch someone else's children.

"Maaaaamaaaa!" Adeline screamed.

"Shh, Mommy's watching TV with Auntie Mary." Lucie hushed. "Look! He's kissing her!"

"Oh, why would you do that, Marco!" Marilyn fretted.

With David juggling work and family, Lucie was tending to her garden, sketching her concepts, and trying to keep up for when she reentered the workforce with the rest of the young mothers.

Both Brandon and Adeline had been born geniuses(!) and thus, never had any trouble gaining skills in logic. Before the halfway mark to their birthdays, both had already mastered their logic skills.

"Here you go, baby."

"Darling, I was promoted today, and I thought we could do something special tonight. I've called the babysitter and she'll take our hands off for a while so you can take a well-deserved break." David surprised Lucie.

"...Break? What does that mean again?" Lucie quipped.

"Thank you so much, David. That was a terrible movie but I really needed the fun moodlet."

"You are the best husband ever. How much money do we have left?" She smiled in wonder.

He lovingly took her hands and gently squeezed them. "Less than $200 now, but I still love you and that's all that matters, right?"

Lucie thought for a moment. "Not really. We still have overdue bills at home."

David lightened up. "It's okay. One more stop to go and it's free!"

They stopped by a club. It wasn't the hotspot of the night which was completely fine with them.

They got all the privacy they wanted.

Two days later, they made enough to pay their overdue bills before the repoman came...again.

"Honey, that was a great date the other night, but I'm pregnant again!" Lucie cried. "We can't afford it!"

"Don't worry, Lucie. We'll get through it like we always do."
